A Christmas Goodbye

A Christmas Goodbye

She clings to the umbrella
as if it held all the prayers
sent up to heaven
o'er the past year.

All alone and crowded in;
family, friends, and memories.
She stays there, still,
till words and people fade.

The rain and snow keep falling
as she joins them on the ground
all shelter gone from her
as her tears fall melting the snow.

He couldn't make it home
though he'd promised he'd try,
all she can bury are his things
and herself in their memories.

Late into that night she gazed
when a cold wind swept in to kiss her cheek
and gently sigh... the only gift from him
that year was a quiet Christmas goodbye.
