Her Whispered Name

Her name, whispered by wanton men
Sailors, left without their lovers
But for that which rocks them,
Engulfs them in her breast,
Cradles them in sleep,
And starves them into dreams,
Slides against them with her tears,
And takes from them their breath
In exchange for their taking her in.

Calypso, empress, queen, goddess,
Loveless lover of sailors’ souls
And reaper just the same
Her name, whispered
Against the fog
Soft and harsh alike.

To love her in entirety
Is to give yourself entirely
To Calypso, herself, the sea.
